Insulin resistance affects 1 in 1000 people with most those individuals unaware that they suffer this condition. Insulin resistance is the hallmark of metabolic syndrome that can result in cardiovascular disease, diabetes and kidney failure. Insulin is a hormone that acts to remove glucose from the blood. However, it also signals to fat cells and prevents lipolysis (the breaking down of fat). Thus in periods of high blood insulin, the bodys' ability to breakdown fat and use for energy is limited, making fat loss very difficult.
Insulin resistance can go largely undiagnosed as clinical practices test traditional markers of diabetic risk in the form of blood glucose and HbA1c, which, in the face of elevated insulin secretion by the beta-cells, stay within the normal ranges with the potential for underlining insulin resistance going undetected.
In addition to condition such as diabetes, insulin resistance is also a risk factor for thyroid problems, infertility (men and woman) and weight and fat gain. Thus treating this condition is fundamental to restoring a healthy metabolism to allow normal bodily functions to progress. For example, improving insulin resistance can result in significant weight loss and improvements in fertility health.
We target treatment of insulin resistance via a number of avenues. Firstly we intensify the needs and history of an individual before developing a 360oC overview of a patients metabolism. We then embark upon treatment strategy that centres of life-style modifications alongside a section of drugs / or supplements that specifically target thyroid issues and insulin sensitivity. We take appointments both in our Harley Street Clinic (London) or Southdown Medical Clinic (Harpenden, Hertfordshire).
